Established in 1998, ABB's transformer factory in Chongqing is the group's largest investment in China. Transformers are typically used for power transmission and distribution systems, such as in large substations. The generator transformers produced in Chongqing are used in power generation to increase the voltage of the electricity produced at a power plant for long-distance transmission. ABB's transformers are widely used in China and play an important role in many of the country's key projects. In 2009, Chongqing began designing and manufacturing high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter transformer to support China's growing need for high-voltage transmission systems.
